A girl was sitting at the table drawing pictures. Suddenly, a striped Cat came and started watching what the Girl was doing.
— Что это ты делаешьделать / to do? — спросиласпросить / to ask любопытная Кошка.
"What are you doing?" asked the curious Cat.
— Я рисуюрисовать / to draw для тебя домик, — сказаласказать / to say Девочка. — Смотрисмотреть / to look: вот крыша, вот труба на ней, а это дверь…
"I am drawing a house for you," said the Girl. "Look: here is the roof, here is the chimney on it, and this is the door..."
— А что я там буду делатьделать / to do?
"And what will I do there?"
— Будешьбыть / to be (future) печку топитьTo heat/light the stove (expression), кашу варитьварить / to cook.
"You will heat the stove and cook porridge."
И Девочка нарисоваланарисовать / to draw, как из трубы домика идётидти / to go дым.
And the Girl drew smoke coming out of the house's chimney.
— А где окошко? Ведь кошка прыгаетпрыгать / to jump в окошко!
"And where is the window? After all, a cat jumps through the window!"
— Вот тебе окошки. Раз, два, три, четыре… — сказаласказать / to say Девочка и нарисоваланарисовать / to draw четыре окна.
"Here are windows for you. One, two, three, four..." said the Girl and drew four windows.
— А где я гулять будугулять / to walk?
"And where will I go for a walk?"
— Вот тут.

"This will be a garden," she said.
Кошка посмотрелапосмотреть / to look и фыркнулаSnorted (verb) - to make a sound expressing disdain:
— Какой же это сад? Тут ничего нет!..

The Cat looked and snorted:
"What kind of garden is this? There is nothing here!.."
"What kind of garden is this? There is nothing here!.."
— Подождиподождать / to wait, — сказаласказать / to say Девочка. — Вот тебе клумба с цветами, вот яблоня с яблоками, а здесь огород: тут морковка растётрасти / to grow и капуста растётрасти / to grow…
"Wait," said the Girl. "Here is a flowerbed with flowers, here is an apple tree with apples, and here is a vegetable garden: carrots grow here and cabbage grows..."
— Капуста! — поморщиласьGrimaced / Wrinkled her nose Кошка. — А где я буду ловитьловить / to catch рыбку?
"Cabbage!" the Cat grimaced. "And where will I catch fish?"
— Вот здесь…
И Девочка нарисоваланарисовать / to draw пруд, а в пруду рыбок.

"Right here..."
And the Girl drew a pond, and fish in the pond.

— Это хорошо… А птички будутбыть / to be? — спросиласпросить / to ask любопытная Кошка. — Я люблюлюбить / to love птичек.
"That is good... And will there be birds?" asked the curious Cat. "I love birds."
— Будутбыть / to be. Вот тебе курочка, вот петушок, вот гусь, а вот и три цыплёнка…
"There will be. Here is a hen, here is a rooster, here is a goose, and here are three chicks..."
Тут Кошка вдруг облизнуласьLicked her lips (in anticipation of food), замурлыкалаStarted purring и тихо-тихо спросиласпросить / to ask:
Then the Cat suddenly licked her lips, started purring and asked very quietly:
— Ну… а мышки там будутбыть / to be… в домике?
"Well... and will there be mice... in the house?"
— Нет, мышей не будетбыть / to be.
"No, there will be no mice."
— А кто будет сторожитьсторожить / to guard мой домик?
"And who will guard my house?"
Его будет сторожитьсторожить / to guard… — Девочка нарисоваланарисовать / to draw будку. — Будет сторожитьсторожить / to guard вот этот Бобик!
"It will be guarded by..." The Girl drew a kennel. "This Bobik (dog) will guard it!"
Кошка даже хвостом дёрнуладёрнуть / to twitch, и шерсть у неё почему-то дыбом всталаStood on end (bristled up from fear/anger).
The Cat even twitched her tail, and her fur for some reason stood on end.
— Не нравитсянравиться / to like мне твой домик, — сказаласказать / to say Кошка. — Не хочухотеть / to want я там житьжить / to live!..
"I don't like your house," said the Cat. "I don't want to live there!.."
И ушлауйти / to leave, будто её обиделиобидеть / to offend.
Вот какая капризная Кошка!

And she left, as if she had been offended.
